GDOL set to open satellite office in Monroe Wednesday, Sept. 26

The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) will open a satellite office in Monroe Wednesday, Sept. 26, to provide a wide range of employment-related services to residents of Walton County. The full-time Monroe Career Center was among five the GDOL had to close in June as part of a cost-cutting measure.

It will be housed at the Walton County Campus of Athens Technical College at 212 Bryant Rd. in Monroe. The office, which will be in Room 509, will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  GDOL is renting the office space from Athens Tech.

“The opportunity to locate a satellite office at Athens Technical College has made it possible for us to continue to provide staff and services to job seekers and employers in Walton County,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “I want to thank State Rep. Bruce Williamson, State Technical College Commissioner Ron Jackson, Athens Technical College President Flora Tydings and Walton County Campus Manager Jimmy Hogg and their staff, Walton County Commission Chairman Kevin Little, and Partnership For Family, Children and Youth Coordinator Dena Huff for their interest and cooperation in making this possible.”

The office is a satellite of the GDOL’s Covington Career Center, which has assigned three of its staff to provide job search and career development assistance, as well as resume-writing assistance by appointment. Computers are available at the office for jobless residents to file unemployment insurance (UI) claims on-line. Employers are able to list job openings there.

“The variety of services that will continue to be provided here are critical to our employers, job seekers, and the overall strength of Walton County’s economy,” said State Rep. Bruce Williamson, of Monroe. “It’s encouraging and refreshing to see state and local leaders working together to develop solutions to address the needs of all Georgians, especially in light of the budgetary and other issues we all face.”

Customers are encouraged to make appointments for services and may park along Blaine Street and in the parking lot at the old Blaine Street Elementary School.

Joyce McCready of Loganville, manager of the Covington Career Center, also will serve as the manager of the satellite office.
