Poverty is Real: Athens 2012 to be Held December 7 at the 40 Watt Club
Poverty is Real, Inc., (PIR) and Red Eye Gravy Records (REGR) announced today the re-release of the “Athens: 2011” compilation CD, which will be sold to benefit the Athens organization Whatever It Takes (WIT). The album now includes an unreleased live track of R.E.M.’s “The Lifting,” originally from the album “Reveal,” recorded in Germany in 2001, as well as songs by Widespread Panic, Patterson Hood, Futurebirds, Modern Skirts, Hope for Agoldensummer, and others.
The “Athens: 2011” compilation is available at PIR’s web site, www.povertyisreal.us, and on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and CD Baby. It is being released by Red Eye Gravy Records, based in Decatur, who is donating its promotional services to PIR.
PIR also announced that its second annual Athens event—Flagpole Presents Poverty is Real, a Benefit for Whatever It Takes—will be held December 7 at the 40 Watt Club and feature The Interns, The District Attorneys, Hope For Agoldensummer, and Dave Marr.
The Interns, which started as a Futurebirds side project, is making a regional name for itself with a distinct sound and loyal fan base. The District Attorneys recently won Flagpole Magazine’s 2012 Artist and Album of the Year (“Slowburner”) and Hope For Agoldensummer was awarded best in the Folk/Singer-Songwriter category. Dave Marr is best known as the leader of the seminal Athens band the Star Room Boys.
Poverty is Real, based in Decatur, Georgia, plans and coordinates fundraising concerts in communities throughout the U.S. and donates the funds raised to local organizations fighting poverty. The organization publishes a commemorative album for each show, comprised of songs donated by local artists, to raise additional funds for its beneficiaries.
The Athens: 2011 event was held at the 40 Watt Club on December 6 and featured Patterson Hood, Futurebirds, Claire Campbell, and Woodfangs. The event raised $7,500 for Whatever It Takes. WIT works to ensure that by 2020 all Athens children are on course to graduate from a higher education.
“We are so grateful for Poverty is Real’s dedication to ending the cycle of poverty in Athens,” said WIT executive director Tim Johnson. “They are really making a difference in our community.”
The Athens: 2011 album was originally produced and sold at the December, 2011 Athens event. PIR has since received the unreleased R.E.M. track, hence the re-release.
To date, PIR has held events in communities including Decatur and Athens, Georgia and Asheville, North Carolina and raised more than $28,500 to fight poverty at the local level. PIR is also planning Nashville events November 30 and December 1 at the Bluebird Café and Exit/Inn. www.povertyisreal.us.
