Public Invited to Help Shape Direction of Downtown Streetscape Improvements at Feb. 7 Open House
Downtown businesses, property owners and the general public will have the opportunity to provide input on downtown infrastructure improvements (water main, sanitary sewer, drainage and streetscape) from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 7. This is a drop in format and no presentation is planned.
Project representatives from T.Y. Lin International and the Athens-Clarke County SPLOST department will be at the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce Board Room, 246 W. Hancock Ave., to discuss concerns and expectations with those wishing to provide input.
Athens-Clarke County has contracted with T.Y. Lin to conduct infrastructure improvements (utilities and streetscape) in Downtown Athens. The improvements are being funded by 2005 SPLOST dollars.
Phase One will focus on East Clayton Street (from Lumpkin St. to Thomas St., including Wall Street) and North Jackson Street (from Washington St. to Broad St.). Streetscape improvements will take into account the engineering and design requirements from The National Association of City Transportation Officials’ Complete Streets Urban Street Design Guide, ACC Corridor Management Strategy, Downtown Athens Historic Design Guidelines, the on-going Downtown Master Plan and property/business owner and stakeholder input.
