Athens Today--January 5

Okay, Winter, you can leave now.

Zumba is the Latin-inspired fitness dance craze that is sweeping the nation. Pump it up and sweat it out  at the 40 Watt Club Friday night with Zumba After Dark. The party starts at 7:30pm and admission is $10.

Today at 4:30pm, you can take in a free Zumba class at FloorSpace Dance. The Chase Park studio is offering free classes all this week, so don’t pass up a chance to try it out!

You may have missed it. Dondero’s, the yummy eat-in or take-out restaurant on North Milledge is now running the café at the State Botanical Garden. It’s a great place to refuel after a brisk walk in the woods.

There’s a memorial service today at 2pm at the Congregation Children of Israel for an extraordinary, gentle man who spent most of his life making Athens a better place. Burt Sparer, 86, died on Dec. 23. He had a direct impact on the way Athens looks and the way we treat the most vulnerable in our city. Thanks, Burt, for living such a generous life.

Today is the birthday of Michael Thurmond, a native Athenian who has long years helping our community and state. An African Amercian, Michael was electd to the General Assembly in a white majority district in Clarke County. He has written books and served as the State Labor Commissioner for many years before losing a race for the U.S. Senate.
