Leigh Ackerman, 22, of Lilburn, and Osman Yousufzai, 21, of Augusta, were among a large group of UA students who participated in a Rivers Alive workday. The two helped unearth and collect bags of decomposing beer cans and old beer bottles near East Athens Community Park. They are members of Impact at UGA, which leads service groups across the country. About 20 Impact members worked on Saturday.

Hundreds of volunteers turned out for the Rivers Alive cleanup in Athens on Saturday morning. They picked up trash, junk and debris from rivers, streams and wetlands in town. Folks gathered in Dudley Park for registration and then for lunch after the cleaning was done. Both community members and University of Georgia students joined together to clean our waterways.

My wife and I took part in the Rivers Alive clean-up yesterday. It's a great event for a great cause--stewardship of our environment. Thanks to the sponsors, organizers and participants from Ed and Joy Tant!
