Unregistered Tag and Weed Discovery Leads to Multiple Warrant Arrest

The information in this story comes from the ACC Police Department. An arrest doesn't mean a conviction.

Officers arrested two people Wednesday after police investigated an unregistered vehicle, according to an Athens Clarke County Police report.

Police were patrolling on Gaines School Road at about 9 p.m. when the officer noticed a a white Nissan Altima that was usually parked at the 100 block of Viking Court. The Altima's tag was registered to a Mercury Sable.

After the officer spotted it, he followed it back to Viking Court. Jamison Sheats, 32, told police that he didn't know why the registration for the car was to a Mercury Sable.

While the officer and Sheats were talking, Sheats asked if he could smoke. When he opened his cigarette box, there was a small bag with marijuana in it. Sheats looked at the officer and then handed it over, according to the report.

Police placed Sheats under arrest and later found out that Sheats had several possible warrants out.

Sheats was arrested and taken to Clarke County Jail.
