Weekend Planner: Too Many Possibilities, Not Enough Time

Here is our pick of activities going on in or around Athens this weekend: from the Bear Hollow Zoo Fundraiser to the 9/11 Commemoration Community Sing.

 

1. BEAR HOLLOW ZOO FUNDRAISER

Where/When: Terrapin Brewery from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday

Why Go: Enjoy Terrapin beer and animal visitors from the Bear Hollow Zoo, including turtles galore, while helping fund the expansion and renovation of the current black bear exhibit at Memorial Park.

Pricing: $12 for a custom Bear Hollow Zoo glass, sampling of 32 ounces of Terrapin beer and tour of the brewery

2. ATHENS WATER FESTIVAL

Where/When: Sandy Creek Park on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Why Go: Discover the wonders of water at this festival and learn how to protect this precious resource through interactive activities and games for the entire family.

Pricing: $2 per person ages 4 to 64 for park entry fee; activities at festival are free

3. UGA FOOTBALL VS. SOUTH CAROLINA

Where/When: Sanford Stadium on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Why Go: Football season is back and in the first Southeastern Conference  game, the Bulldogs challenge the Gamecocks, a longtime rival team, on home turf.

4. SELF-GUIDED STUDIO TOURS: ATHENS POTTERS

Where/When: UGA Ceramics Studio, 160 Tracy Street #2B and Good Dirt in Athens on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: These tours provide an opportunity to peruse the studios of Athens potters at your own pace and talk with the artists whose hands create fine works of clay.

Pricing: Free

5. 9/11 COMMEMORATION: COMMUNITY SING OF GABRIEL FAURE’S REQUIEM 

Where/When: First United Methodist Church on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

Why Go: The Athens Choral Society and the Music Ministry of Athens First United Methodist Church will lead a community sing of Gabriel Faure’s Requiem to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Judy, Please let me add a possibility for gardeners. Garden Bones is having a Plant & Seed Swap Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2pm. Stuart Cofer is letting us use the parking lot at Cofer's on Mitchell Bridge Road. Open to the public and free.
