What's Best for Athens: Big Parks or Little Ones?
The Leisure Services Department says go big.
What should be the future of parks in Athens-Clarke County?
Some residents of the Boulevard neighborhood have been pushing for small green spaces like a passive garden on a plot of land at Barber and Boulevard, and some county commissioners have been supportive.
But the Athens Banner-Herald reports that the Leisure Services Department wants commissioners to focus on large recreational facilities that can serve lots of reisdents.
On a limited and dwindling budget, where should the county direct its resources -- toward a patchwork of neighborhood oases or toward improving and expanding destination parks? Is it possible to do both?

Athens has a wonderful big park in Worlds of Wonder on the east side. We try to get our boys out there at least once a month.
What's really needed are small neighborhood parks. There's nothing west of the bypass outside of Holland Park -- which is really far from people who live south of Jefferson Highway.
