Willie Nelson at the Classic Center

A good time with a national treasure

Willie Nelson and his long-time harmonica player, Mickey Raphael, performed at the Classic Center in Athens, Ga., on Aug. 10, 2012.

By now more the gray-headed than Red Headed Stranger, Willie Nelson still can draw a big, enthusiastic crowd and give them an outatanding show. In a performance co-presented by The Classic Center Theatre and The University of Georgia Performing Arts Center, that's exactly what he did Friday evening.

The Brothers Osborne, a young duo based in Nashville (originally from Maryland), opened with a good, solid country set. Then Willie ambled onstage and immediately jumped into "Whiskey River," beginning a packed set of one classic song after another -- including, of course, many of his own. It's tempting to say he did them all, but that wouldn't be possible in one evening -- maybe not even in a week.

I neglected to acknowledge "Trigger," Willie's famous guitar with the gaping hole worn through the body. I've added a photo.
