Laura Bush was the genuine article. Her emphasis on education came from working in the school system herself. She was always so graceful. Each first lady will have her own ideas and individual personalities. We've been blessed to have good women to support our leaders for the most part.

Abraham Lincoln - I used to have a ton of posters in my room to inspire my students as I taught them lifeskills - not surprising that I had these up:
*On preparation- Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.
** On testing one's character - Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.
***On putting first things first- Don't worry when you are not recognized, but strive to be worthy of recognition.

I worked with at-risk kids, and obviously, their lives were very out of balance. All I wanted them to do is to learn to think through what they say and do and it would make a difference in the outcomes in their lives. One girl was always in trouble and it was always in a particular teachers's room. Finally, I asked her why. She said, I just don't like that lady!' I thought for a minute, and said (not sure where this came from but it sounded good-lol), "You know, respect is not personal. That is her room and she has the right to her rules. So, you don't have to like someone, but you do have to respect their authority over you since you have no control over that". Later, she told me that she thought of that before she opened her mouth and realized that there was no payoff; she's the one who would pay negatively, not hte teacher. I used to use the analogy that if you get pulled over for speeding, you may not like the man giving you the ticket, but you have to respect the badge that gives him the right to uphold the law. I love teaching life skills. It's so wonderful when you see the lightbulb go off over their heads!
