Giving Thanks for District 3

The election season is heating up.

In 2012, the district lines for our local commission members were redrawn. The boundaries for District 3, now represented by George Maxwell, expanded to include much of the neighborhoods along Prince Avenue.

George Maxwell announced at a recent Commission meeting that he's not running for re-election.

Thus far, there are three people who have decided to run for this open seat. Herb Gilmore, an Athens native, businessman and former member of the Planning Commission, is running. According to Flagpole, so is Melissa Link. And so is Rachel Watkins, who works at both Avid and the Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau.

During this season of Thanksgiving, we should give thanks that we have at least three residents willing to endure a political campaign and race just so they can serve their community.
