Volunteers welcomed summer by serving the Athens community

Rather than taking it easy on the first day of summer, dozens of Athens volunteers didn’t let the heat stop them from serving their communities.

It was all part of Community Service Super Saturday, where hundreds of red-shirted Wells Fargo team members and friends welcomed summer in 23 cities across Georgia.

Ideal for June, which is National Homeownership Month, housing for those in need was a big focus. In Athens, volunteers installed the floor on the home’s foundation, located at 170 Carpenters Circle. The construction marked Athens Habitat’s 80th home. Wells Fargo presented the organization with $15,000.

In all, 29 volunteer activities occurred Saturday. Volunteers helped everyone from seniors to dogs and cats, serving at senior care centers, children’s organizations, food pantries, animal shelters and so much more.

Wells Fargo donated $120,000 to upgrade the housing situations of 12 families, either by building new homes or repairing existing ones. A majority of this work was done in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, which received $75,000 in all.

“We were determined to make our summer count – the heat didn’t keep us away,” said Mark Tamasi, District Manager for Wells Fargo. “I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday than serving our communities alongside our co-workers and friends.  We were honored to help in this way and we’re proud to support these non-profits that work hard to make a difference all year long.”

Five events took place in Augusta and four in Columbus.  In other cities, including Americus, Dalton, Gainesville, Macon, Rome, Savannah and others, volunteers showed their support at a single event.
