A Celebration of Bin Laden's Death

 The University of Georgia Chapel bell was ringing and UGA students were singing last night as people took to the streets to revel in one thing: Mission Accomplished.

The news of had reached Athens – and people were ready to celebrate the end of a near-decade long manhunt. A group at the corner of Broad and College Avenue brought flags and a hefty dose of patriotism as they waved and cheered passing cars.

“I saw the people in D.C. and said we need to hit the streets,” said John DeCotis, a senior from Fayetteville.

DeCotis said everyone driving by was honking their car horns and cheering on the group.

Chris Gates, a UGA senior from Augusta, who came to the scene shortly after President Barack Obama's televised address to the nation, said everyone seemed excited to celebrate.

“It's love for our country,” he said. “Even the cops have been supportive.”

The chapel bell rang as the group cheered passing cars. That's what brought out law student Jeremy Roberts.

“I could hear the screaming from my apartment, and the honking, and the fireworks,” he said, waving a flag and wearing a makeshift colonial outfit of a black dress coat with white socks pulled over the bottom of his khaki pants.

The group chanted “USA! USA! USA!,” sang the national anthem and even cheered the name “Ronald Reagan.”

“I wish people were this proud to be American every day,” DeCotis said.
