Athens Today: August 31

Today is Wednesday, go out and learn yourself something!

1.  The is hosting a tonight from 5pm-8pm. The event is an open invitation for you to drop by any time during the evening, bring your family and find out more about the youth programs offered at the Institute.

2. The Athens Land Trust holds weekly Nature Writing training sessions led by Pat Priest, a freelance writer and radio producer. Today, Grady Thrasher, twice Georgia Author of the Year for Children's Picture Books, will be speaking. People who enjoy drawing and photographing nature are also welcome to attend, and material produced may be used in the Athens Land Trust newsletter and website. The meetings take place on Wednesdays from 4:30pm-5:30pm, the cost is $5 to attend and fees will benefit the ALT.

3. The third and final will be held this evening at . The purpose of the forum is to give Athens residents an opportunity to view maps of the proposed new Athens-Clarke County Commission districts, and it will consist of a brief presentation followed by questions and answers.

4. The newest production from , “Dralion”, begins today and will run through Sunday, September 4, at The Arena at Gwinett Center. The show draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and ancient Chinese acrobatic arts. Tickets are $35-$95.

5. The UGA Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists will host a Q&A session with award-winning journalist Chandra R. Thomas at 7pm today at the Zell B. Miller Learning Center. Thomas will speak about the importance of becoming a multimedia professional, using social media as a professional journalist, taking advantage of journalism opportunities outside the classroom and more.
