Athens Today - June 19

Sunday

1. Happy Father’s Day! In 1966, President Johnson signed a proclamation that declared the third Sunday of June as a day to honor our dear dads. But Father’s Day wasn’t official until 1972, when President Nixon signed it into law as a permanent annual holiday.

2. Looking for a good movie to see with the fam? For the little ones, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, Kung-Fu Panda 2, African Cats, Rio, Soul Surfer and Rango are all playing today. If you have older children, you might go for Pirates of the Carribbean, X-Men, Green Lantern or Super 8.

3. Get ready for a week of music in Athens! Download the AthFest iPhone app that shows a complete schedule of shows, lets you personalize it, and connects it to a map of venues.

This meeting provides an opportunity to meet people who have been involved with local projects such as community gardens, farm-to-school movement, community kitchens, local food security and food policy.

5. Leaf and Limb pickup will be in Zone 4 this week, which includes the Kingswood, Stonehenge, Creekside, Holly Hills, and Woodhaven neighborhoods.
