Athens Weekly Planner: Oct 31 - Nov 6

Lots of cool stuff going on in Athens this week! Parties and celebrations abound to welcome cool weather, let loose our twisted egos and enjoy our creative community.

Happy Halloween!

Your children can enjoy crafts and trick-or-treat for non-food prizes at the this Monday, October 31 from 6pm-8pm. Admission is free, and treats are provided by the Friends of the Library.

Several bars in Downtown Athens, including , , and , will be hosting costume contests on Halloween night, and many of them will offer cash prizes. So, get your creative juices flowing and head downtown to win some dough!

The will host a Halloween Cover Show, in which twelve local bands will play 10-minute cover sets featuring music by The Zombies, Black Flag, The Ramones, and more.

Celebrity comedian and author David Sedaris will be performing at  tonight, October 31 at 7:30pm. Call The Classic Center box office (706-357-4444) for tickets and info.

The will be at on Tuesday evening from 4pm-7pm. This will be the last Tuesday market of the year. The Saturday market will now be open from 9am-12pm starting next Saturday, November 5 and through the last market of the season on December 17.

The Athens Farmers Market, in conjunction with the Classic City Chef’s Association, will host an Autumn Harvest Feast to benefit Wholesome Wave of Georgia. The family-style dinner will begin at 4pm on Sunday, November 6 at The Hill. All ingredients will be locally produced and sourced from the Athens Farmers Market. Tickets are $50 per person, and may be purchased online or at the Athens Farmers Market.

Mayor Nancy Denson and the hold their regular voting meeting Tuesday, November 1, 7pm at City Hall. Items on the agenda will include SPLOST, sidewalk improvements, jail expansion and more. Citizens are encouraged to attend and there will be opportunities to comment or ask questions about the various issues on the agenda.

The relatively new, tiny, mostly vegan restaurant known as Gymnopedie will be hosting a Thanksgiving-themed cooking school, with the first class on Tuesday, November 1 from 6pm-8pm, and subsequent classes held on November 8 and 15. Classes include light supper and wine, and interested persons should register in person at the restaurant in the Leathers Building on Pulaski.

is an open poetry reading held the first Wednesday of every month upstairs at . If you are interested in reading, simply show up at 8pm and sign in. Word of Mouth attracts a diverse group of readers and listeners who pay attention, so it is a good place to share your work.

Four alumni authors will be featured at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication Alumni Authors Showcase on Thursday, November 3 at 4pm. Guests can hear from Kathleen Cochran (aka Marcia Stevens Smith, ABJ ’76), Take This Man; Laura Spinella (ABJ ‘ 84), Beautiful Disaster; Frank Stanfield (ABJ ’80), Unbroken:The Dorothy Lewis Story and Joe Samuel “Sam” Starnes (ABJ ’89), Fall Line. A book signing and reception will follow the program.

will be hosting a screening of American Graffiti for its annual membership drive kickoff, this Friday, November 4 at 5:30pm and 8pm. At 7pm, there will be a reception catered by and served by the . Tickets are (only!) $10.

The UGA Bulldogs take on New Mexico State this Saturday at Sanford Stadium. Kickoff is at 12:30pm.

The ACC Community Tree Council will have their Annual Tree Sale at Bishop Park this Saturday from 8am-12pm, during the Athens Farmers Market. Over 18 species of trees will be available. 

The will host to raise funds for the Athens Area Humane Society (AAHS) and PAWS of Athens (PAWS) while awarding a $300 cash prize to the winning charity. Eighteen participating charities will have booths with their homemade chili, and attendees will sample the chili and vote for their favorites. The charity with the most votes will be named the winner. While sampling the chili, guests will have the chance to learn about the participating charities and what good work they are doing in our community. Guests will also be able to sample delicious beer, participate in a brewery tour, and enjoy live music.The event takes place at the Terrapin Brewery on Saturday, November 5 at 5:30pm. Tickets are $20 in advance or $22 at the door.

The Athens Youth Symphony, under the direction of Karl Schab, will present a Fall Concert on Sunday, November 6 at 4:00 pm in the. The program will include works by Handel, Sibelius, Morton Gould and others, performed by more than 75 young musicians from Northeast Georgia. The concert is free and open to the public.
