Athens Today--October 29

The crowds have thinned and flown South, so traffic will be calmer today.

1. The Athens Farmers Market will be today from 8 a.m. until noon at Bishop Park. Peppers, eggplant and other fall vegetables will be available, and Chef Chris McCook of the Athens County Club will be doing a cooking demonstration at 9 a.m.

2. The , 1199 Prince Ave, is holding a free Tai Chi session today at 9:30 a.m. in the park behind the on Talmadge Street. Julie Buffalo is the instructor. Tai Chi is moving meditation that helps balance and circulate energy, among other benefits.

3. Chef Hugh Acheson, home from a whirlwind tour for his new book, will be at today at 4 p.m. to sign A New Turn in the South. This gorgeous book, with photos by Rinne Allen, would make a fabulous Christmas gift.

4. The Wild Rumpus is Athens’ annual Halloween Parade, open to all who wish to participate. Athens is bursting at the seams with creativity, and it is never more apparent than during Halloween. The Wild Rumpus is a chance for everyone to celebrate this unbridled creative spirit together, and this year’s parade will be hosted by the Georgia Theatre. A post-parade concert will be given featuring Beats Antique, Jason Thrasher, Kite to the Moon, Packway Handle Band, Showtime and The Tiger Girlz. Those who wish to participate should review the Parade Guidelines.

5. Make plans today to attend the Sunday afternoon ramble at Boulevard Woods, where you can enjoy hot chocolate, cookies, neighbors and a walk along a nature trail. Boulevard Woods is on Barber Street where Boulevard ends. Come any time between 4 and 6 pm. Stay on the trail; in places it’s kind of steep.
