Athens Today--October 8

This is a day to stay outdoors!

1. Today is . All kinds of vehicles, from backhoes to Bobcats to regular pickups and police cars, will be on display at Southeast Clarke Park on Lexington Road. Kids can climb and explore them. Bob the Builder has nothing on these guys. 10 am. to 1 p.m.Free.

 2. The is hosting a free Family Day event. The event is geared to a current exhibit, “American Letterpress: The Art of Hatch Show Print,” which illustrates the fusion of art with popular culture and music. After you take in the exhibit, you can visit the Michael and Mary Erlanger Studio Classroom and make a Hatch Show-inspired print.

3. What could be better as Halloween approaches than a chance to score a gently used, free costume? Today is National Costume Swap Day, and is hosting a swap from noon until 2 pm. Bring a retired children’s costume and take one home.

 4. The Athens Farmers Market is in full autumn splendor this morning, from 8 to noon. Musician Larry Forte takes the mike at 8 a.m., followed by the Fall Festival at 9 and a cooking demonstration at 10 by Shiraz Fine Wine and Gourmet. At 10 a.m., musician Caroline Aiken performs.

5. Journalist, retired journalism professor, author and historian Al Hester leads one of the ’s Local Heritage Walks through the Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery today at 10 a.m. Located on Fourth Street, the cemetery dates from the 1880s. It offered a beautiful place for Athens’ black residents to be buried. The Gospel Pilgrim Society set up the cemetery. The tour cost is $12 for ACHF members and $15 for non-members.
