Athens Today: September 14

Wednesday, Hump Day!

1. Big kids (ages 6-10) might enjoy “DIY Craft” hour at today at 4pm, where they can learn all sorts of cool crafting techniques. Bigger kids (ages 8-14) can enjoy the new Thursday Night Craft Club series, starting tomorrow from 4pm-6pm. This series, taught by Hope Hilton, will explore Printmaking methods such as screen printing, relief printing and more.

2. The folks at Athens Food Tours are planning a Fall Bicycle Farm Tour. This 35-mile ride will take place Saturday, October 15, 2011 in Madison, GA, from 8:30am-noon. To sign up call 706-338-8054.

3. The State Botanical Gardens of Georgia Gold Medal Plant Symposium and Sale take place today. The Symposium, which begins at 8:30am, will entail a book signing and raffle, as well as guest speakers Wilf Nicholls, director of the garden, Matthew Chappell of cooperative extension, Vince Dooley, former UGA football coach and athletic director, and Rita Randolph of Randolph Greehouses. The Plant Sale will take place from 10am-4pm.

4. The offers Wildcard Wednesday as an opportunity for teens (11-18) to meet and participate in fun projects and crafts after school. Today at 4pm, learn how to make fabric beads. If you have some cool fabric scraps, bring them in to share.

5. The Georgia Climate Change Coalition will host a viewing party at for the 7pm-8pm segment of the “24 Hours of Reality” multimedia presentation by Al Gore. The presentation will represent every time zone around the globe, and will be broadcast once per hour for 24 hours in an attempt to show the reality of our climate crisis. Tonight’s event begins at 6:30pm, with live streaming at 7pm.
