Athens Weekday Planner

A look at what Athens has in store for this week.

1. The hosts twice a month. This morning at 10:30am, bring your child age 0-24 months to the story room to enjoy activities designed to nurture language development. The Library will also host tonight at 7pm.

2. Whole: Mind. Body. Art. has Zumba for kids! Enjoy Zumbatomic for kids ages 4-7, every Monday at 6:30pm. The class costs $6 for one child, $3 for siblings. You can also opt to get a punch card that gives you 10 visits for $50.

3. The ACC Federation of Neighborhoods will meet at Monday evening at 7:30pm. This independent, non-partisan organization exists to inform citizens about local issues affecting them. Athenians from every neighborhood are invited to attend, as public comment is an integral component of all programs. This month’s sessiom is titled "Arts in Athens!"  and panelists include George Foreman, Director of UGA's Performing Arts Center, Marilyn Wolf-Ragatz, Chairperson of the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission, Dale Monson, Director of UGA's School of Music, Terrell Austin, President of the Board of Town and Gown, and Mary Padgelek, Instructor of the Arts.

4. The ACC Commission and Mayor will hold a regular session in City Hall, Tuesday evening from 7pm-11pm and you may download the agenda here. Topics will include, but are not limited to, the Oconee Rivers Greenway Network, proposed widening of Mitchell Bridge Rd., the schematic design of the SPLOST Tennis Center, the Solid Waste RecycleBank, and the proposed implementation of drought management measures. Citizen input will be heard.

5. Expose your baby or toddler to a world of languages with , every Tuesday afternoon at 4 pm. These programs are free to all Full Bloom members and only $3 to drop-in.

6. GeorgiaCares will present a workshop on Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program. The class is hosted by the and will take place in Winterville, at the Winterville Depot, Wednesday from 10am-10:30am. In addition to discussing the upcoming Open Enrollment session, individuals may be screened for eligibility and sign up for an appointment with a counselor for further assistance with their application.

7. The ladies of Kappa Alpha Theta are hosting an old-fashioned , a local nonprofit serving abused and neglected children in our community by providing trained community volunteers to act as legal advocates, speaking up for the best interest of children. On Wednesday from 5pm-8pm, there will be cotton candy, snow cones, hot dogs, hamburgers, face painting, as well as a dunking booth with fraternity members.

8. Another wonderful will take place Wednesday, Oct. 5, and will feature a Santana Tribute band. Gates will open at 5pm, giving you a chance to find your seat and enjoy a picnic before the opening act takes the stage at 6pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under, and tables are available to rent for a fee. Guests can also have Bulldawg Food deliver their dinner from or .

9. It’s time for ! This gigantic consignment sale, which focuses mainly on children’s clothing and gear, also has home decor, adult clothing and shoes. Arrive on Thursday for a preview sale from 6pm-9pm, for which admission is $4. Friday, entry to the sale is free, and the hours are 11am-7pm. On Saturday, some of the items will be half-off, and the hours are 8am-12pm.

10. Athens Creative Theatre's production of the classic tale of an aging toymaker and his puppet, Pinocchio, takes on timely issues in , playing this weekend at the . Audiences will love following Pinocchio's journey from an awkward wooden puppet to a real, live boy and will be charmed by Geppetto's transformation from demanding creator to a real, live father. The show begins Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7:30pm and runs through Saturday, Oct. 15.
