Athens Weekly Planner: Jan. 2-8

Happy New Year! It's back to "business" as usual here in Athens...

 

UGA football fans will congregate in living rooms all over Athens today to watch the Outback Bowl at 1pm. UGA will take on Michigan State in Tampa, FL and the game will be aired on ABC-TV.

On Friday, the UGA Women’s Gymnastics team will compete against Denver University at 7:30pm in Stegeman Coliseum.

The UGA Men’s Basketball team will go up against Alabama on Saturday at 7pm in Stegeman Coliseum.

The ACC Mayor and Commission will hold a regular session on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 7pm in City Hall. Topics of discussion will include, but are not limited to, the Sandy Creek Park pedestrian bridge, the ACC Jail public art project, the adoption of a resolution for metropolitan transportation planning, and the approval of qualifying fees for 2012 elections. Citizens are welcome to attend and public comment will be heard.

Tuesday is Open Toad Comedy Night at . Admission is $5 and the show starts at 8pm. This event now takes place twice monthly due to popular demand, so the first and third Tuesday of every month, you have the chance to test your comedic skills in front of a live audience, who will gladly pelt you with foam rocks if you go over the 6-minute time limit. Performers get in free and must sign up by 8pm.

Time to take down the Christmas tree! Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful encourages citizens to bring their denuded trees to the “Bring One for the Chipper” event this Saturday, Jan. 7, from 9am-1pm at one of seven local drop-off locations. This free event is now one of the largest “tree-cycling” events in the entire nation! Anyone who brings a tree on Saturday will receive a free tree seedling.

KACCB has also partnered with Junk South to help remove trees from the homes of our county’s elderly residents. To request a free tree removal, you must be 60 years of age or older and a resident of Athens-Clarke County. To request removal, call KACCB at (706) 613-3501 ext 312 with your Name, Address, and Phone. Appointments will then be arranged directly with Junk South.

Residential garbage and recycling normally collected on Monday will be picked up on Tue., Jan 2. All other collection days remain the same. Commercial curbside garbage and recycling services to customers in the Downtown District will be collected as regularly scheduled. Leaf and Limb collection will be in Zone 2 this week.

Wednesday is a great night for trivia in Athens! Many local restaurants host trivia games, which are an opportunity to show everyone how smart you are and win cash and prizes, too. Visit , , , (5 Pts.) and to enjoy , drinks and good food!

Word of Mouth is an open poetry reading held the first Wednesday of every month upstairs at . If you are interested in reading, simply show up before 8pm to sign in. Word of Mouth attracts a diverse group of readers and listeners who pay attention, so it is a good place to share your work.

 Zumba is the Latin-inspired fitness dance craze that is sweeping the nation. Pump it up and sweat it out  at the  Friday night with Zumba After Dark. The party starts at 7:30pm and admission is $10.

For the irresistible combination of jazz and good food, head to the Porterhouse Grill on Wednesday nights, and Friday nights at Highwire Lounge you can enjoy the Rand Lines Trio.

t hosts the Terrapin Bluegrass Series on Tuesdays, and this week’s musical guests are The Deadfields. Pints of Terrapin beer will be $2 all night long! Visit The Melting Point on Saturday for a show with The Swingin’ Medallions.

Local country rock musician Bobby Compton will play at the Georgia Theatre on Friday.

will feature Tumbleweed Stampede, Black Girls, Jane Jane Pollock and Dude Magnets on Friday night. Saturday’s lineup will include Spirit Hair, The Goons and Golden Brown.
