Athens Weekly Planner: Nov. 14-20

There is a lot going on in Athens this week. Get out and do something!

, a citizens advisory board considering all tree related matters in the county, will hold their monthly meeting Monday evening from 4pm-5:30pm. Arbor Day activities, a tree fair in the fall, review of ordinance related provisions for trees, oversight of a commemorative Trees for Tomorrow Program and educational initiatives are among the annual activities for the Community Tree Council.

Monday night at , several Athens restaurants will celebrate the release of last album with samplings from , , , , , The Four Coursemen, and more. Special screenings of live concert footage from an archival 35mm print and a special 90-minute R.E.M. video retrospective will be shown in both theatres. Proceeds will benefit , Communities in Schools and .

Every first Monday of the month, the Athens Folk Music and Dance Society presents “The Hoot,” a night of free entertainment at the . This monthly musical variety show has been an Athens tradition for decades. Tonight’s Hoot will feature Between Naybors, Mr.Jordan and Mr. Tonks, Rachel Lynn and The Skipperdees. Susan Staley will open and host the event. Music starts at 8pm, but get there early for a good seat. Next month’s Hoot will be a Christmas Carol sing-a-long at Little Kings with The Klezmer Band and The Solstice Sisters.

If you are interested in becoming a part of Athens’ growing film scene, join other film nuts for a night of networking at on Tuesday. It should be a great opportunity to meet other filmmakers, build up contacts, talk about your projects and find enthusiastic crew for your films.

Operation Safe Drive is Tuesday at the  Parking Deck, from 10am-2pm, providing free vehicle and bicycle inspections by trained UGA and Five Star Automotive mechanics. Checks will include general mechanical issues, fluid level top-offs, wipers, headlights, tire pressure and bicycle chains and structures. The first 500 vehicles will receive a coupon for a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich, and the new Chevy Volt will be on display.

The y is holding a this week, Tuesday-Sunday, and encourages you to drop off bags of food at the Mars Hill Rd. or Pet Supplies Plus offices. Monetary donations will also be accepted, and you can even donate online. A large bag of food costs about $30 and can feed one animal for a whole month.

Wednesday is Trivia night at , , , , and .

Local superstar chef will be at on Wednesday at 7pm to talk about and sign his new bestselling cookbook, “A New Turn in the South.”

The Clarke County Democratic Committee will meet at Firehall No. 2 on Thursday at 6pm. The meeting is free to attend and open to all.

, an Athens artist collective, will hold its 30th annual show and sale this week, Thursday-Sunday. The public is invited to Athens Institute for Contemporary Art () for refreshments and wine on opening night, Thursday evening from 5pm-9pm. In honor of its 30th year and to thank the community for all of their the support, The Studio Group will host a raffle to benefit ATHICA.

The presents The Miles Davis Experience, an innovative performance that begs listeners to experience post-war America through the music of Miles Davis, with accompanying visuals and beat-poet narration. The performance takes place on Thursday, 8pm, at the Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall.

Attend the Tony Award-Winning Best Musical “In the Heights” at on Thursday at 7:30pm., and you could soon be soaring through the mountain treetops on a zipline adventure. One lucky ticket holder will win two Adventure Tour gift certificates from North Georgia Canopy Tours™ in Lula, Ga.

The lineup at the Georgia Theatre this week includes Geoge Clinton and the P-funk Allstars on Thursday, Perpetual Groove on Friday and Drivin’ ‘n Cryin’ on Saturday.

Perpetual Groove will also be Live in the Lobby! of radio station WUOG 90.5 on Friday at 8pm.

The UGA Bulldogs will play the Kentucky Wildcats at 12:20pm on Saturday.

If you have not yet been on an Athens Heritage Walk, you can join in on the last one of the year this Sunday at 2pm. John Waters, founder and director of Graduate Studies in Historic Preservation at UGAs College of Environment and Design, will guide participants through the Milledge Circle Historic District.
