Athens Weekly Planner: Nov. 21-27

Happy Thanksgiving! It will be a quiet week in Athens, when the locals can roam free...remember to shop at locally owned businesses for all your holiday gifts and feasts!

The Athens-Clarke Co. garbage and recycling pickup schedule will be altered this week due to the Thanksgiving holiday. If your trash is usually picked up on Monday or Tuesday, it will be picked up on Monday, Nov. 21. If your trash is usually picked up on Wednesday or Thursday, it will be picked up on Tuesday, Nov. 22, and if your pickup day is usually Friday, it will be on Wednesday, Nov. 23 this week. 

A free class in tree identification will be given today (Mon, Nov 21) at 4pm at Lake Herrick. Walk through Oconee Forest Park and learn to identify trees and other plants, acronyms and mnemonics for remembering tree characteristics.

The y is holding a  this week, Tuesday-Sunday, and encourages you to drop off bags of food at the Mars Hill Rd. or Pet Supplies Plus offices. Money will also be accepted, and you can even donate online. A large bag of food costs about $30 and can feed one animal for a whole month.

The , located in the historic Haygood House in Watkinsville, GA, is a great place to shop for gifts. The gallery features the work of 125 local and national craft artists in a variety of pottery, blown and fused glass, jewelry, candles, wrought iron, pen and ink drawings, woven rugs, jackets, hand bags, wood and bath products. Beginning Friday (Nov. 25), Chappelle Gallery will be open 7 days a week until Dec. 24.

, also located in Watkinsville, will be hosting its 41st Annual Holiday Open House and Sale, this Friday through Sunday. Attendees can watch daily demonstrations in pottery making, raku, glassblowing, weaving and painting.

The , located in Comer, GA, also offers a hands-on shopping experience, with free ornament painting for kids under 12 on Saturday.

The video rental store on S. Milledge Ave., , is going out of business and will be liquidating its stock this week, with nothing priced over $10.

Athens Food Tours will host a special 1 ½ hour tour of downtown Athens on Friday at 1pm. On Saturday and Sunday, the tours will be “Customer’s Choice” ; you have the option of choosing what time and which locations you prefer to visit.

There is no Farmer’s Market this week, but visit the following Saturday and through December 17 for local crafts and eats.
