Athens Weekly Planner: October 24-30

This week in Athens: art, music, ghosts and ghouls!

STAY IN SHAPE

Participate in the Athens YMCA Zumbathon, Monday from 5:30pm-7:30pm, and your $5 entry fee will go towards the YMCA’s Youth Programs.

Whole.Mind.Body.Art. hosts a Ladies-Only, Freestyle Dance every Tuesday night, where you can shake your booty sans greasy dudes and jealous gals. The Dance Dance Party Party goes from 7:30pm-8:30pm and costs $6 per lady.

Exercise and enjoy nature at theState Botanical Gardens Hiker’s Circle every Thursday morning. Hikers should meet under the Shade Garden Arbor at 8:30am. Interesting and amazing plants will be noted along the way, and participants may convene afterwards at the new Coffee Shop in the Visitors’ Center.The program is free but donations are welcome.


EXPAND YOUR MIND

If you are lacking in basic computer skills, visit the for a personalized class every Thursday at 9am. A class teaching the Excel program will be offered online September 13, and you do not need Excel installed on your computer to participate. Call ahead to register (706) 613-3650.

The Rose of Athens Theatre Group will present Mark Twain’s classic story of Huckleberry Finn at the Seney Stovall Chapel, October 28 at 7pm and October 29 at 2pm and 7pm.

The UGA Creative Writing Program's VOX Reading Series takes place on Monday, October 24 and Tuesday, October 25. On Monday evening, San Francisco poet D.A. Powell will read from his work at 7:30pm at . Authors Dorothea Lasky, Travis Nichols, and Monica Fambrough will read from their work at Tuesday, 7:30pm at Cine. Both events are free and open to the public.


BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

Did you know that  black cats and dogs are typically hardest to adopt, they tend to stay the longest, and are more likely to beeuthanized in shelters across the nation. The Athens Area Humane Society’s Adoption Center, located in Pet Supplies Plus, will literally have a the week of Halloween. To feed off the excitement fueled by the arrival of Halloween, black lights will help feature black pets with white colors, festive decor, glow necklaces and Halloween candy for the kids.

The will be held on Tuesday from 4pm-7pm at Little Kings, and Saturday from 8am-12pm at Bishop Park.

Free IT Athens is a group of Athenians on a mission to provide low-cost information technology to our community, and has donated over 1,000 computers to individuals since 2005. The organization will be celebrating its sixth year and is hosting its annual meeting at the Athens Institute for Contemporary Art (ATHICA) on Friday October 28 at 7pm. The event is free and open to the public, and food and drink will be provided. Current and former volunteers, friends and family are encouraged to attend.  

HALLOWEEN FUN TIMES

Athens-Clarke Leisure Services will host a and a haunted tour of Bear Hollow Zoo, beginning at 5pm on Thursday, as well as a Thursday at Lay Park at 6pm with games, a costume contest, candy and more for children ages 5 to 12.

The hosts a series of guided walking tours through historic neighborhoods in Athens, and this week’s tour is Halloween-themed. Experience the darker side of Athens as you walk through Downtown and UGA’s North Campus, hearing tales of spirits, hauntings, superstitions, mysteries, murders, suicide and other legends of the Classic City. The tour will be given Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday night at 7pm and tickets are $12 each.

The Wild Rumpus is Athens’ annual Halloween Parade, open to all who wish to participate. Athens is bursting at the seams with creativity, and it is never more apparent than during Halloween. The Wild Rumpus is a chance for everyone to celebrate this unbridled creative spirit together, and this year’s parade will be hosted by the Georgia Theatre. A post-parade concert will be given featuring Beats Antique, Jason Thrasher, Kite to the Moon, Packway Handle Band, Showtime and The Tiger Girlz. Those who wish to participate should review the Parade Guidelines.
