Great Escapes

After a busy week, everyone needs a little one-on-one time with their honey. Great Escapes brings you ideas for a fun date night in Athens. A visit to The Last Resort Grill and the 40 Watt Club will have you ecstatic by night's end, we hope.

The is an award-winning restaurant that has been an Athens favorite since the mid-1990s. Located in a small space formerly occupied by the Last Resort music club, rich with Athens history, this “quietly sophisticated bistro” makes for a romantic setting.

The exposed brick walls and open kitchen provide a laid-back and intimate setting for enjoying southern-inspired cuisine that often elicits groans of pleasure from the first bite. Food critics have described the dining experience as luscious, invigorating and comfortable.

Recommended are the boneless short ribs, black pepper and cornmeal-dusted roast scallops and fresh, farm-raised north Georgia trout. The menu changes seasonally, mainstays include Sundried Tomato Grits, cooked to creamy perfection, and Praline Chicken, which is a double chicken breast stuffed with cheese, topped with a walnut-honey sauce, and served with a side of grits and seasonal veggies.

Of course date night must always include desert, and The Last Resort does not disappoint. Athens very own bakes the incredible layer cakes served at the restaurant. Recommended are the Hummingbird, German Chocolate or Carrot cakes. There is also incredibly delicious cheesecake made by Tammy Cleveland of Blackbird Bakery.

If you and your date want to enjoy a cup of coffee with desert, you will be pleased to know that the local roasting company, Jittery Joes, is one of many local food suppliers for The Last Resort. Others include , Market Fresh produce, Flatwoods Farm and Buckhead Beef.

After your dinner at The Last Resort Grill, you may be too stuffed to move. But hopefully, you are in the mood for more entertainment, because the , located just a block away, has an awesome lineup for Friday night.

Allison Weiss, a talented young singer/songwriter with roots in Athens, brings her catchy, upbeat tunes back for a much-anticipated visit. Her style is a fresh take on acoustic girl-song, lacking the corny overtones of say, Carrie Underwood or Jewel. Melodically, her songs are complex, akin to Old 97s, and vocally, she lacks the overdone vibrato of her Idol-esque contemporaries. Cool and confident, Weiss is sure to deliver a great show. Also scheduled to perform are The Winter Sounds and Young Orchids.

Go, have fun and stay out late, because you deserve it!
