House Hunt -- Fabulous Finds

The houses featured this week are centrally located but out of the way, tucked into private corners of our busy little town.

This week's homes are priced between $200k-$400k and are located relatively close to Athens' center. Part of what makes this town special to me are the dead-end streets and neighborhoods that give one a sense of privacy while still being in the middle of it all. One day this may change but, for now, there remain enough trees, grass and wildlife that you don't feel overwhelmed by the cacophony of a growing metropolis.

The gallery to your right shows pictures of houses that are hiding in the middle of town. Riverbend Pkwy, Riverview Rd. and Pulaski Hgts. are residential streets off of major transportation corridors. The house on Oakland Way is not so obscure, but I thought it would be worth a shout when I saw the price.

This home is off Riverbend Rd, which is accessible by S. Milledge Ave. and College Station Rd. To get there, you drive past what seems like 10,000 apartments where UGA students reside. Once past this student settlement, you come to a quiet, dead-end street that runs alongside the Oconee River. The homes are all very beautiful and the neighborhood seems peaceful. There is a deck where you can watch and listen to the river flow by, a hot tub, sun room, in-law suite and plenty of windows. It has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2,996 sq. ft. and is priced at $300,000. Contact Reign Streiter at 706-543-4000.

945 Riverbend Pkwy.

Right next door, this brick house is a bit newer, constructed in 2004. It has 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and a basement, and is priced at $315,000. Contact Coldwell Banker at 706-543-4000.

145 Hendrix Ave.

This Craftsman style home is off Pulaski St, within walking distance of Downtown and UGA Campus. Constructed in 2005, it has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a basement and is priced at $259,900. The address is Hendrix, but to make this house even more obscure, there is no street sign. It can be found by turning onto Pulaski Hgts, a dead-end off of Pulaski St. Contact Briggs Carney at 706-621-4890.

134 Hendrix Ave.

Across the street, is a small but very charming house, with vaulted ceilings, bamboo floors and a rocking chair front porch. Pathways through the terraced garden in the backyard lead to a little creek. It has 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, 1,020 sq.ft. and is priced at $199,000. There is one bed/bath downstairs and it has a loft master suite upstairs. All of this and it is only 3 blocks from Downtown! Contact Michael Littleton at 706-621-4890

155 Oakland Way

This ranch style home off Milledge Ave. doesn't look like much from the outside but has tons of potential. With wood floors, ceramic tile in the bathrooms and a finished basement with a bonus kitchen, this home has a lot to work with. There are 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a carport, exterior access to the basement, big backyard and it is priced at only $199,000. This is a steal for 5 Points. Contact B Presnell at 706-543-3800
