Pulaski Heights House receives LEED Certification

Residential home designed by Lori Bork Newcomer is only the 7th house in state to be so certified.

Athens has several buildings on the UGA campus and in the community with LEED (Leadership In Energy and Environmental Design) certification, including the ENSAT center at Sandy Creek, , and Building 1516, a residential hall, among others.

Now, Athens has its first LEED Platinum-certified home, designed by architect Lori Bork Newcomer, on Pulaski Heights. The certification is given by the U.S. Green Building Council, which evaluates the buildings on the basis of energy efficiency and environmental sensitivity and integrity.

The LEED rating system that certifies buildings as sustainable. Such buildings work to waste as little as possible, be it electricity, water or materials.

The modern, custom-built house isn't very similar to other older homes in the Pulaski Heights neighborhood, but it does have elements of the old milll houses in the area, said long-time resident Cassie Drennon Bryant.Β

"You can see Lori took her inspiration from older homes in the area," she said. While the new house has a higher roof line and is larger than its neighbors', "we're excited by the house, and by how eclectic our neighborhood is becoming. We like the house a lot."
