The First Day of Spring is Today!

The vernal equinox was at 7:02 Wednesday morning.

ο»ΏYes, it's spring!ο»Ώ The ο»Ώ the forsythia has finished blooming and tulips are emerging. Soon will come the Plantapalooza at the State Botanical Garden, the Twilight Criterium and the opening of the Athens Farmers Market.

But for now...what could be more spring-like in Athens than a chance of a snowstorm?

According to the National Weather Service, here's what's coming:

  • Thursday evening. A slight chance of snow and sleet between 2am and 5am, then a slight chance of snow after 5am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming north after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Friday. A slight chance of snow before 8am, then a chance of snow and sleet between 8am and 3pm, then a chance of rain after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

According to Matt Daniel's blog on Athens weather, there's no likelihood of any accumulation of snow in Athens, just in the North Georgia mountains.
