Weekend Planner: Too Many Possibilities, Not Enough Time

Here is our pick of activities going on in or around Athens this weekend: from the Georgia Theatre Grand Re-Opening concerts to the Athens Brass Choir concert at the Botanical Gardens.

Where/When: Georgia Theatre in Athens on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.

Why Go: The Georgia Theatre is re-introducing itself during the month of August and will be celebrating its first weekend of being back in business with performances by Blackberry Smoke on Friday and RJD2 on Saturday.

Where/When: on Saturday at 8 a.m.

Why Go: The run is in honor of the late Coach Mike Castronis, who was instrumental in promoting athletics in the Classic City, and will benefit the Athens YMCA Youth Programs.

Where/When: Meet at the Heirloom Café and Fresh Market on Friday at 6 p.m., ride until 7 p.m. and socialize from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Why Go: Enjoy a safe and leisurely group ride through some of the city’s west side neighborhoods, become more comfortable riding in Athens, and get to know other cyclists and a new local business, the Heirloom Café.

Where/When: Bascoe Jackson Community Garden at Hill Chapel Baptist Church on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: The Athens Land Trust will celebrate the first season of the Community Garden Network with a volunteer workday followed by a dedication of the garden featuring vegetables harvested from the plot.

Where/When:  on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: This talented choir will perform marches, popular tunes and classical pieces in the beautiful air-conditioned comfort of the Conservatory at the Gardens.
