Weekend Planner: Too Many Possibilities, Not Enough Time

Here is our pick of activities going on in or around Athens this weekend.

It’s Thursday, and you are looking for ideas of what to do for the weekend. Here are ours: from the  “Athens Burning” Opening Reception to “Earlfest.”

Where/When: on Friday at 6 p.m.

Why Go: The opening night for Athens Burning, a new, locally produced documentary centered around the history of the Georgia Theater, will feature a catered reception and screening, followed by a filmmaker Q&A and live music by Bloodkin.

Where/When: ATHICA on Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Why Go: In commemoration of Earth Day, ATHICA will host an evening of readings of original works by local writers, curated by Susan Rosenbaum, inspired by environmental issues and offering personal takes on the often politicized issues surrounding our relationship to our planet.

Pricing: $3 to $6 suggested donation; no one will be turned away for lack of funds

Where/When: on Saturday at 8 a.m.

Why Go: The 5K is a fundraiser for the and the , and the course includes a walk or run along the North Oconee Greenway

Pricing: $25 per person after 4/15; $45 family rate (limit 4 and does not include T-shirts)

Where/When: on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Why Go: Children, ages 6 to 10, will enjoy this traditional egg hunt with prizes and refreshments, while those older and younger can celebrate by watching the Easter Egg Hunt parade.

5.

Where/When: on Saturday at 7 p.m.  

Why Go: The life and music of Earl Murphy, one of the last of the true old-time fiddle players, will be celebrated at this all-ages show featuring Earl’s family, friends and admirers.
