Weekend Planner: Too Many Possibilities, Not Enough Time

Here is our pick of activities going on in or around Athens this weekend.

It’s Thursday, and you are looking for ideas about what to do for the weekend. Here are ours: from the SEC Outdoor Championship in Track and Field to the Athens Human Rights Festival.

Where/When: UGA’s Spec Towns Track, beginning on Thursday at 10 a.m. and running until Sunday’s last event at 5:35 p.m.

Why Go: This event will feature some of the fastest and strongest track and field competitors in the world and many are expected to head to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Pricing: Free on Thursday; $20 for Friday thru Sunday pass; $10 per day.

Where/When: UGA’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex beginning on Friday at 10 a.m. and running until Sunday’s last match at 3 p.m.

Why Go: UGA is hosting the best men’s and women’s tennis teams in NCAA Division 1 on its courts and the UGA Tennis Team is headed for victory.

Pricing: $5 per match for general public; $3 for students.

Where/When: YMCA on Friday with survivor registration and reception at 5 p.m., kid's walk and other activities at 6 p.m. and the opening ceremony at 7 p.m.

Why Go: Athens-Clarke County citizens will join communities across the globe as they celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and raise funds to fight back against the disease.

Pricing: $10 registration fee per person; anything above that you can raise through individual, team, or online fundraising is graciously accepted.

Where/When: on Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. 

Why Go: The Athens Little Playhouse enjoys a stellar reputation and this is an engaging adaption of the tale of the wizard Ruplestiltkin and how he gets his comeuppance.

Pricing: $10 for the general public; $8 for students, seniors and members; $5 for children 12 and under for Sunday matinee.

Where/When: College Square in downtown Athens on Saturday from 10: a.m. to midnight and on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Why Go: The festival has been a springtime political and cultural tradition in Athens for 33 years and features live entertainment and speakers covering a wealth of political topics.
