Director Gabe Wardell to Leave Ciné

Wardell said he accomplished what he set out to do.

Gabe Wardell will end his two-year stint as the executive director of the Athens Film Arts Institute in January. The non-profit runs Ciné, an arts house theater on Hancock Avenue in downtown Athens.

According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, Wardell gave his board notice last week, citing the pressures of commuting from his east Atlanta home while handling the daily duties of running the theater and leading it. January 2 will be his last day.

With Wardell as the director, the story says, the AFAI received non-profit status and Cine made the transition to digital projection. A fund-raising effort raised more than $100,000 for the project.

Board officials will meet soon and move forward with finding a replacement, the story says.
