27th Annual North Georgia Folk Festival

The day-long program dedicated to folk art and music will feature musicians, artists and craftspeople from North Georgia and the Southeast. Cosmic Charlie, Beverly Smith and Alice Gerrard and The Georgia Mudcats will close out the show.

The gates open at 10:30 a.m. and music begins at 11:30 a.m. with the Noogeez, a latter-day incarnation of the great Athens band, The Squalls, who will play music especially for the kids. Additional kid’s activities include “make and take” crafts and continue until about 2 p.m. (or until materials run out).   Music will continue until 9:00 p.m. with Ed Teague and Friends, Bill Ashley and the Kitchen Pickers, Moira Nelligan and the Dixie Jigs, The Darnell Boys, Klezmer Local 42, and the Tony Bryant Blues Band.  A full schedule is available on htttp://www.athensfolk.org.

Craft demonstrators on the schedule are Philip Basinger (blacksmithing), Rebecca Gilliard (sweet-grass basket making), Rosa Hall (Appalachian broom making), Brenda McKaig (hand-spinning and weaving), The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild (quilting) and Peter Loose (folk art).  Other vendors, many of whom will also be showing how their crafts are made, will be selling handmade jewelry, pottery, metal sculpture, glass, leather, walking canes, wood carvings, knitted items, paintings, and soap, along with honey, grits and corn meal, native wildflowers and heirloom seeds. Additional activities planned for the day include workshops on story telling with Pat Shields, old-time singing with Beverly Smith and Alice Gerrard and fiddle/banjo with John Grimm and Tom Ryan.  Plus, you can bring your instruments to join in the all-day acoustic jam.  Food will be available on-site with catering by Empanadas, Farm 255 and Harry’s Pig Shop.
