Local Author to Read Excerpts of Athens-Centered Mystery Novel

Molly Read Woo, author of multimedia book "The Red and Black Breed" will be reading excerpts from her Athens-focused murder mystery novel tonight at Avid Bookshop.

Tonight at will be murder.

The local bookshop will be hosting author Molly Woo for a book signing and reading of her Southern murder mystery, "The Red and Black Breed." The book, set at the University of Georgia, combines photos, websites, music references and trivia to create a multimedia experience.

Following the tale of two graduates, the book weaves a landscape of both local and national history as it references events that took place between August and October of 2001. Woo said although the book is fiction, much of the writing process was spent researching the novel to give it as authentic a feel as possible.

"The two main characters are, of course, fictional, but they used to work at Tin the '80s, and the whole story took place between August and September 2001," she said. "It's very grounded in real news stories."

The book uses excerpts from local songs and articles and numerous original photos to tie the fictional and real world together. Woo said she wanted to create a fictional novel that felt as if it could be the truth.

"I'm sort of a news writer myself," she said. "I've researched this story more than I've researched any story. The most common news that people see are the events we all lived through."

Woo will be reading from her book at Avid Bookshop tonight at 6:30 p.m. Copies of the "The Red & Black Breed" will be available for sale and signing at the event.
