Athens Orthopedic Clinic Shakes it for Cancer Foundation

Athens isn’t home just to mega-bands.

Now it’s the home of a hot dance company: the Athens Orthopedic Clinic.

The staff and physicians of the clinic are among many health care professionals in the national Pink Glove Dance competition. Participants filled out forms and sent in DVD's.

Sponsored by medical products company Medline, the on-line contest helps raise breast cancer awareness during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is the first year of the competition.

 “We were really excited when we heard about this,” said nurse Kathy Lawler, who works in the surgery center. Her colleague, Stephanie Sorrells, was also involved.

“The whole idea was for it to look spontaneous and fun.”

In their on-line video, almost everyone in the practice—even the custodian---shakes their pink gloves, and other body parts, as they dance around the office to Katy Perry’s “Firework.” It’s exhilarating and hilarious.

The dancing was filmed on September 14 and 16. There was no time for people to choreograph, or even rehearse, because the practice’s 100+ employees work in several different locations. They just got in the groove and went with it.

On-line voting began on Monday and will continue through October 21, with the winners announced on October 28. Should the Athens Orthopedic Clinic win first place, the Cancer Foundation of Northeast Georgia will receive the $10,000 prize.

Second place is $5,000 and third place is $2,000.
