Fresh Market to Open at Alps Road Borders Location

Plans are in the works for a new Fresh Market in Athens, Ga., to be built at the old Borders on Alps Road.

A new Fresh Market may soon open in Athens, according to the .

Senior Planner Bruce Lonnee said developers have approached the department for a demolition permit.

"We've had a submittal for demolition at the from Fresh Market, for them to go ahead and start working," Lonnee said.

The permit would allow workers to do minor rennovation on the interior of the building. Lonnee said he is uncertain how soon residents can expect that rennovation will begin.

"We're waiting to see when they bring in the plans to start the permit process," Lonnee said. "But there's definitely going to be a Fresh Market."

What do you think? Is Fresh Market a good business for this location?

I think it's a phenomenal idea to add another grocer with a "health conscience" theme in mind. That said, the traffic on Alps is already extremely tight due to all the businesses crammed in that one little vicinity and I do wonder if a different location would have made more sense. My only question is why hasn't Whole Foods ever jumped on board in Athens?

I bet Whole Foods probably was seeing how TJ's aka Trader Joe's fared in Athens. Just a hunch I have, since it seems when one national chain comes, another competitor of a similar product comes behind. Anyways I agree w/the above post teriffic get for our area.

I wonder where Whole Foods might want to locate if they did come here? Years ago, I tried to interest them in the Earth Fare location, but they wanted a bigger space.

Hi Scott! When exactly do you anticipate opening the location? I am a UGA Alumni and will be launching my gourmet popcorn product, MANNA, by DemWhit's, in The Fresh Market in October. I am excited to promote my product in Athens.

who"s next in line, when you're demoted, Scott ?

lets hope they do away with entire lot, start over and open a REAL BIG WAL-MART, BECAUSE THATS THE INTELLECT AND MINDSET AND MANNERS OF PEOPLE WASTING THE LOT.

NO, a definitive NO ! Athens is a poor socio-economic, terribly educated, filthy, dirty hole in the ground. Mostly over the hill alcoholics running amuck the town. Not a kind town, and certainly not the class of a small urban city. Bad move as predicted to open here. Losing money every day. It will continue to lose, and lose , and lose. Open a Wal-Mart- that is the best Athens can offer. You can hang a sign Publix, Fresh Market, Outback, Logans, etc etc, its still gonna be filled with your average poor dumb wage earning Wal- Mart employee, only in a different uniform.

Kardashianblues, I'm don't know why you are saying such things. Are you trying to be funny? If you are serious, you are wrong--the store is doing very well, as expected. Thanks for writing, and happy holidays and merry Christmas to you.
