George Gibson Dies, George Gibson's Menswear To Close August 3

A longtime Athens business, known for its sartorial style, will close.

George Gibson, the founder of George Gibson’s Menswear, died on Monday in Athens.

Mr. Gibson was the founder and longtime owner of George Gibson’s Menswear, “and was a part of the Athens scene for decades,” said Athens Chamber of Commerce director Doc Eldridge.

"George was an active and enthusiastic supporter of Athens and our business community for decades. He was one of the original tenants at Beechwood Shopping Center when it opened in the early 1960's," said Eldridge. "It is amazing that George passed the day that it was announced that his namesake store would be holding a liquidation sale. Even though he had not been involved in the business for some time, it was always a source of pride for him and his family."

The store moved from its longtime Beechwood store to a new complex on Baxter Street a few years ago. The store closed in May, and the family tried to find a buyer. That effort wasn’t successful, and the store will close on August 3 after a “midnight madness” sale that will start at the end of this week.
