Great Escapes: Just Desserts!

Where do you go when you want just dessert?

Where do you go when you just want dessert? The obvious answer, if you are in Downtown Athens, would be any one of the cupcake or frozen yogurt shops that have opened up in recent years. However, Athens Patch has a few, slightly more romantic suggestions to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Trappeze Pub is known for its excellent beer selection, but is also known for keeping a cake or two available at the bar. , the sister bar of Trappeze, hosts local musicians throughout the week, with Kenosha Kid on Tuesday nights and the Rand Lines Trio on Friday nights.

Speakeasy is a tapas bar, serving up delectable dishes a la carte. The crème brûlée is nothing short of perfection, and your server can recommend the perfect hot or cold beverage accompaniment. Speakeasy also serves cheesecake from Athens’ local Black Bird Bakery, sugar cookies topped with vanilla icing and cherries, white chocolate fondue, and a made-to-order chocolate fallen cake.

This café is known around town for its fabulous, tree-lined patio, and their baked goods are top notch as well. In case of cold weather, the indoor space is nice, too, with large, cozy booths and soft lighting. The baristas can whip you up the best mug-full of hot chocolate in all of Athens, and cookies, muffins, scones, pastries and cupcakes are made fresh daily.

A favorite at Pauley’s is the S’mores crêpe, a gooey, chocolate-filled creation that you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else in town. Late night, this place gets loud and is more like a bar than a restaurant, but stop by in the early evening if you want to enjoy a more intimate experience with your date.

You and your date can order an old-fashioned milkshake, strawberry, vanilla or chocolate, and sip it slowly in this 1950s-inspired diner. Or maybe you would prefer a slice of hot, fresh apple pie à la mode. Drooling yet?

With homemade cakes that will make you swoon, The Grit is the ideal place to go for coffee and dessert. Catch a movie at and then take a short stroll down the street to The Grit and you and your date can chat about the movie you just watched, while sipping a cappucino and sharing a decadent slice of cake. The Grit also serves brownies, cookies and pies.

This week, Ciné will be showing Restless, Drive and Psycho on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Friday night, you can enjoy a special, one-time showing of American Grafitti, followed by a reception catered by . Small plates of slider burgers and fries will be served by the . And all the aforementioned delicious desserts are all within walking distance!
