Money Management: The One Thing They Don't Teach You In College

ATHENS, Ga. – Feb. 20, 2014 – Pay your rent. Go out with your friends. Buy groceries. Split the utilities with your roommates. Slurp down your daily coffee. Check your bank account. Panic.

Before moving into their first apartments, many students don’t know much about managing their money. Many have never needed to track their spending — let alone forecast their expenses and make a budget.

Enter UGA Enactus and Pop N’ Lock Ath. These two student-run groups partnered for a month of student-directed financial education combining their respective goals into interactive events. This collaboration aimed to prepare students for the brave new world of financial responsibility and introduce the Popmoney® personal payment service as a simple and secure way to send and receive money.

The two organizations launched “Money Management for Dummies: A crash course in finance for students." More than 35 students attended the Blue Card event and Freshman Year Odyssey Seminar.

The event was so successful that Panhellenic sorority Delta Delta Delta invited Pop N’ Lock Ath and UGA Enactus to educate their chapter on the basics of budgeting, saving and investing. The two organizations challenged members to flex their financial muscles in a money-themed game of Jeopardy.

“Jeopardy was a really fun and interactive way to learn and re-learn some financial tips,” said Melanie Doyle, a member of Delta Delta Delta. “I was also really excited to hear about the personal payment service, Popmoney.  I can really see myself using the service with my roommates.”

Popmoney is a secure and simple way to transfer money electronically — whether to split the dinner bill or to ensure that the rent is paid on time. After a short registration process, the user can send money from the Popmoney web page or mobile app to almost anyone using the recipient’s name and email address or mobile number.
