Silver & Archibald hires Patrick B. Cates, Benjamin J. Johnson to retire

Silver & Archibald, LLP is pleased to announce that Patrick Cates joined its law practice March 3, bringing his years of experience as lead counsel in Social Security Disability Insurance overpayment and medical improvement cases  to the firm’s Social Security Disability practice area.

“Our firm is pleased to welcome Patrick to the team,” said founding partner Art Archibald. “He is a talented young lawyer who embodies our commitment to serving as dedicated advocates for our clients as we assist them in navigating the bureaucracy they can face in the Social Security Administration.”

Cates, a native of Fayetteville, Ga., joins the practice after five years with the Georgia Legal Services Program in Athens, Ga., where he represented indigent clients as a senior staff attorney. In 2005, he earned his J.D. from Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Ore., where he was a winner of the Oregon Association of Administrative Law Judges Student Writing Competition and a writer for the Willamette Law Review. He earned his undergraduate degree in History from the University of Georgia in 2001.

Cates is a 2010 graduate of the State Bar of Georgia Young Lawyers Division Leadership Academy, and serves his profession as an adjunct instructor at Athens Technical College. A running and cycling enthusiast, Cates lives in Athens with his wife, Heather and two young boys.

“Ben has made a tremendous impact on the lives of our clients for more than a decade with our firm,” said Archibald. “He will be missed greatly by those clients and the rest of our team. We wish him the best.”

Johnson’s decision to retire brings a career of more than 40 years spanning both business and law to a close. A former U.S. Army Captain, he has worked closely with Art Archibald in advocating for injured workers as a leader in the firm’s Workers’ Compensation practice.

Prior to joining Silver & Archibald, LLP in 2002, Johnson served a variety of roles at Aetna/Travelers Insurance Company. During his three decades with the company, he developed his interest first in business, pursuing and receiving his MBA from Georgia College and State University in 1978; and then in law and legal representation, earning his J.D. from the Woodrow Wilson School of Law in 1984.

A University of Georgia alum, Johnson is looking forward to having a little more time to devote to both family and his beloved Georgia Bulldogs.
