How to Save Money Using Twitter and Facebook
These days, everyone is online. Your spouse and your dog have their own blog and Grandma is tweeting about her latest cruise. So what else is new?
Although you may be aware that many businesses use social media applications to let people know about special sales and discounts, how are you really taking advantage of this?
Twitter, created in 2006, is nothing short of a phenomenon. Sometimes described as the SMS (texting) of the web, it is a platform by which people can use short phrases (140 characters or less) to describe what they are doing, where they are going, who they are with, etc. Some of these messages may be ridiculously trivial, while others have been instrumental in the overthrow of dictatorial regimes.
You (yes, you!) can use Twitter to snag yourself a bargain, in Athens and elsewhere, by following these simple steps:
1) If you haven’t done so already, create a Twitter account. Pick a username, password, and write a sentence or two about yourself.
2) After you have a username, you will want to start following people and businesses who tweet about savings. For example, follow @SpecialsATH to find out about specials at some of your favorite Athens restaurants. Or, type in your favorite Athens business and see if they are tweeting. The more you follow, the more deals you will see in your news feed. Suggestions: @AthensPatch, @VisitAthensGA, @CouponingAthens
3) After collecting followers and followees, you can then opt to make lists of certain businesses so that you can find deals easier. For example, make one list of local businesses, one list of corporate brands, and additional lists for family and friends you may follow. Or you could separate restaurants from other retailers. By doing this, you can easily access the information you want.
4) Learn how to use hashtags, or the # symbol. Words or phrases preceded by # can serve as qualifiers for tweets, making it easy for followers to find information about topics that interest them. For example, by typing in #savings, #coupon, or #AthensGA into the search bar, you will find all tweets that also contain these words and phrases.
