Athens Votes: Mayor Wins Second Term; Runoff in Commission Race

Turnout in Clarke County was 25.5 percent, seven points better than the statewide result.

Athens Mayor Nancy Denson easily held off her challenger in Tuesday’s election and will serve a second term

Denson, a Democrat, had 60 percent of the vote to beat Tim Denson.

“I’m going to probably take tomorrow off, but I’m anxious to get back to work and start taking care of the people’s business,” she told the Athens Banner-Herald Tuesday night.

Three commission races also were contested Tuesday:

District 1:  Sharyn Dickerson (59.7 percent) beat incumbent Douglas Lowry — 1,223 votes to 827.

District 3: Melissa Link (37 percent) and Rachel Watkins (33) are headed to a July runoff. Two other candidates split the remaining 30 percent.

District 5: Incumbent Jared Bailey (53.6 percent) beat Dave Hudgins — 955 votes to 825.

Two commission races went unopposed, as did five Board of Education races.

Turnout in Clarke County was nearly seven points better than the statewide number — 25.5 percent of the county’s 54,683 registered voters.
