Storytelling Workshop with Regi Carpenter

Avid Bookshop and local storytelling organization Rabbit Box are sponsoring a workshop for aspiring or experienced storytellers. The workshop will be led by Regi Carpenter, an award-winning storyteller from Ithaca, New York who has been the featured performer at top storytelling festivals around the country. She has held a residency at the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, Tennessee and in 2012 won first place at MassMouth, one of the most competitive storytelling slams in the country.

She received the J.J. Reneaux Award in 2008 from the National Storytelling Network; Reneaux was an exceptional and beloved Athens-area storyteller who passed away in 2000.

Rabbit Box started its monthly storytelling events in Athens in the spring of 2012 to draw together disparate parts of the community through the simple-but-strong thread of storytelling. Stories have focused on topics such as “Broken Open” and “On the Road.” Free coaching is available to people interested in telling a story, and the workshop with Regi Carpenter is another opportunity to tune up a story that has been rattling around in someone’s mind and memory.

The lively, hands-on workshop will be held January 28th from 7 to 9 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall at 780 Timothy Road in Athens. The fee is a sliding scale ($10 to $20). Participants should bring a notebook and pen or pencil.

Pat Priest, one of the Rabbit Box organizers, said, “We’re bringing Regi to Athens to help people think through how to shape their memories into interesting narratives. She’s an award-winning performance artist as well, so we know participants will gain new skills for bringing their stories to life.”

Avid Bookshop, already a community institution in Athens, is a co-sponsor. Rachel Watkins, in charge of events and PR at Avid, proudly recalls that the very first Rabbit Box was held at Avid. “We needed an active and thriving storytelling community in Athens. Rabbit Box has filled a void, and we’re so grateful to support their efforts.” Priest, one of the Rabbit Box coaches, added, “We hope participants will feel more confident about performing at a Rabbit Box event sometime.”

For the January Rabbit Box story-telling session at The Melting Point, eight raconteurs in will draw on the theme “Resolution” on January 16th, a Wednesday, at 7 PM. Tickets are $5 for the show.

Rules for Rabbit Box performances and astonishing audio files can be found at rabbitbox.org.
