Veteran's Day Author Visit: Meet Matt Alexander, author of Southern Sailor

Avid Bookshop is honored to host a Veteran's Day Event on Sunday, November 11, 2012, from 4pm to 5pm.

Southern Sailor: The Naval Warfare Experience of Dewey Otis Lindsay, Jr. (as told to Matt Alexander) is the true story of a boy who grew up not far from Avid Bookshop on Nacoochee Avenue in the Boulevard Neighborhood.

Southern Sailor tells the life story of Dewey Otis Lindsay, Jr. of Athens, Georgia, a sixteen-year-old boy who went to war, fought in the Pacific Theater, and came home to rebuild America. This story was gathered from letters written to and by Dewey, Jr., as well as through lengthy conversations with him from December 2010. Some of the information comes from the author’s own experiences as a United States Navy officer, and his own knowledge of history. The life of the average person provides as much insight into human existence as do the stories of the better known great and powerful. This one life, the life of Navy fightin’ man Dewey Otis Lindsay, Jr., sheds light on the more personal side of the war.

About the author: Matt Alexander is a writer and student of humanity. He was formally educated as an anthropologist and has traveled on four continents studying history and culture. Through this, he has found that it is the unique stories, the personal histories of individual people, that add the colors to our world. He is interested in hearing and preserving every life history, which led him to create Personal History Writer.
