Meet Author Mary Alice Monroe at the Athens-Clarke County Library

Avid Bookshop, the Athens-Clarke County Library, and the Georgia Center for the Book are honored to present Mary Alice Monroe in celebration of her new book, THE SUMMER WIND. This event will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at the Athens-Clarke County Library. There is no admission charge.

The Summer Wind is the second book in Monroe's Lowcountry Summer series, following the New York Times-bestselling The Summer Girls. This series is a poignant and heartwarming story of three half-sisters and their grandmother, who is determined to help them rediscover their southern roots and family bonds. In book two, Dora's facade collapses and she suffers “broken heart” syndrome. Carson returns from Florida to face life changing decisions, Lucille confronts a health scare, and an unexpected visitor has Harper reconsidering her life’s direction.

Mary Alice Monroe's efforts to reconnect human nature with the natural world resonate with her readers. Monroe is a bestselling author of sixteen novels and two children's books. She has achieved top positions on many bestseller lists, including the New York Times, USA Today and SIBA (Southern Independent Booksellers' Alliance). She has received numerous awards, including the RT Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2008 South Carolina Center for the Book Award for Writing--she was recently featured at the National Festival of the Book. The Butterfly's Daughter won the International Book Award for Green Fiction. Mary Alice is an active conservationist and serves on the Board of the South Carolina Aquarium, The Leatherback Trust, and Charleston Volunteers for Literacy. She is a frequent speaker at book festivals, conferences, and private events. Monroe is also a frequent contributor to magazines and online blogs.
