Earth Day 2014: Quick Tips to Conserve Electricity, Save Money

Here's one: Replace your 5 most-used lights with energy-efficient models.

Every day is a good day to conserve energy, but consider Earth Day 2014 a good time to re-examine your electricity use.

Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22.

Mister Sparky, a nationwide home electricity company founded in Atlanta, offers these tips to conserve energy and save you money. Mister Sparky has Georgia locations in Athens and Marietta.

Lighting and Appliances

Lighting and appliances account for a quarter of residential energy use. Replacing your five most used lighting fixtures with Energy Star qualified lights can save you $70 per year. If your budget allows, consider replacing older appliances with newer, more energy efficient models.

Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans can allow you to ease off the thermostat during the summer, saving money and taking pressure off your AC unit. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, most celing fans are relatively easy to install.

Power Strips

Consider using advanced power strips, which when turned off keeps electronics from drawing power when they are turned off or not being used.
