Bookreview: Faith of Our Fathers

Faith of Our Fathers takes readers on a historical journey of churches that have been a part of Georgia’s landscape since the arrival of James Oglethorpe.   The colorful pictures and historical synopsis reminisce how these churches have provided more than a place for spiritual healing, but served as a place for physical healing during the Civil War.

Author Don Joiner, a historian and educator at heart, began his journey of researching and visiting churches as a post-retirement hobby in 2007.    His vision was to create a short history of each church built between the years of 1750 and 1864.   The end result was a compilation of approximately one-hundred churches.

The influence and impact these places of worship had on the founding fathers that sought wisdom and spiritual guidance became prevalent in Mr. Joiner’s journey.  Their decisions such as to answer the call to rise and fight for independence, to defend a fledgling nation, and to seek healing and understanding when opinions differed were often formed within the walls and on the pews.  It was this reoccurring theme that inspired the title.

The pictures and synopsis of each church appeals to those that are history seekers, Civil War enthusiast, or genealogists.  One can locate a particular church through the table of contents that is grouped by counties.  The author provides an overview of the early years of Georgia and background of the varied denominations that have influenced the religious landscape of the state.
