Is more education the answer?

Twenty-something writer wonders if going back to school is the answer.

At the end of my twenties, and almost the end of my wits, the recent change in the economy has begun to startle me.

I was, am, a communications person. I worked in news and radio for the last 5 years and have now found myself at a slightly different field. Finance.

Yep, I was one of the ones downsized by the wonderful economy we are in.

No woe is me story here, I am not someone interested in making my problems, your problems, however this recent shift in my daily activities makes me wonder what other degree should I have gotten? What career field should I try and pursue at this point?

Student loans are still being paid from the Bachelor's degree I earned. And I am certainly not in a position to afford to quit full time work to go back to school (imagine Adam Sandler singing "back to school...Back to school" in Billy Madison).

What hope do the late twenty-something’s have? We are programmed to fear this change, this new wave of Obamacare and the next would-be President.

It's got me shook up for sure. There are no guarantees anymore. I remember when I was graduated from high school; early childhood education was the one major that would produce a "sure thing" job.

NOT anymore. I have about 20 colleagues who all have a degree in teaching and they now work with me, in operations, at a bank. Ironic?

What way can we be sure about the career we picked? Do we abandon our dream of being a newscaster and love the job we are with? Like being encouraged to dance with the one you came with?

Even in the Banking realm, many positions are becoming obsolete, online banking is now taking the place of paper statements, ATM's  are taking the place of tellers for deposits and transactions.

Is going back to school the only way to make sure we have futures in corporations? Is the medical field where we should concentrate our efforts?

Some will argue with Obamacare, highly paid physicians will now be reduced to minimum wage positions and students will stop pursing degrees, because of the lack of pay.

What do we do? Drop our responsibilities and run back to the classroom? Surely by the time we complete our new training, the tides may turn. And we will be in a new industry, one we chose second, one we "fell back on" our "plan B" career, which we don't love as much and in turn would quickly abandon if greener pastures came calling.
