Our Friend Lou

No Clems were hurt in the production of this piece. Any similarities to Clems, alive or dead are purely coincidental. The video isn't that good, but it gives an idea of how the concert went.

We were invited to Hodgson Hall by our friend Lou Tolosa, for a performance by the Athens Choral Society, of which she is a member. Let me first thank Lou and the over one hundred other members for a Christmas gift that will remain a great memory for years to come.

In an attempt to culture up my cousin Clem, I invited him along, he declined. “They don’t sell Budweiser, I can’t understand a word of it, they can’t do Free Bird and who wants to listen to a bunch of instruments Hank Williams didn’t and Alan Jackson don’t use.” My aunt says he’s been in therapy all day, simply from the idea of it. That means he’s been in the barn talking to Benny the mule and drinking beer all day. I just can’t teach the boy anything.

Seriously, the concert was amazing as over a hundred instruments and voices rose toward Heaven, in unison. The songs did not flow around those in attendance, but instead infused with and became part of everyone in the room. The sound was as clear and crisp as a cold snowy morning in the mountains. Angelic is the word which accurately describes it.

I make my living from my art and there is something to be said of that. However, when I hear something so beautiful, when I experience something so sweet, it’s then that I see myself for the mutt I am and it’s then that I thank God for those who will work this hard to produce a joyous sound for us all. Their reward is the song itself, and that my friend is a reward indeed.
