Charlotte Reinke, A Musician with a Social Conscience

A memorial service for Ms. Reinke will be held Saturday, July 20, at 2pm at Emmanuel Episcopal on Prince Avenue.

Charlotte Louise Reinke, daughter of the late Dr. Daniel J. Reinke and Amanda Fenner Reinke, was born in Spirit Lake, Iowa, on April 4, 1918, died Sunday, March 24, 2013.

Ms. Reinke followed her musical heritage, her mother having been her first teacher.  She earned the degree of Bachelor of Music from Cornell College and her master’s degree from Syracuse University. 

She furthered her studies in New York City and in Europe, where she sang concerts, in oratorios with the N.W. Grand Opera for a season in Seattle, and was the winner of the N.W. Regional Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the air.

Ms. Reinke served 2 years in Special Services with the United States Army in Germany.  She taught for many years at Syracuse University and Florida State University. Her last post was at the University of Georgia, from which she retired Emeritus in 1982.

Ms. Reinke supported many organizations that dealt with justice, peace, ecology, and the needy.

As a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, she served on the vestry and the altar guild, and sang in the choir.  Ms. Reinke completed the EFM Study, and served as a Stephen Minister and on the outreach committee.

Survivors include her sister, Ada Offerdahl and her husband, John, of Charlotte, NC; niece, Charlotte Offerdahl and husband, Grady Burgin of Germanton, NC; nephew, John Offerdahl and his wife, Julianne of Smyrna, GA, and great-nieces, Rachel Offerdahl of Raleigh, NC, and Anna Offerdahl of Chapel Hill, NC.

A memorial service will be held on July 20, 2013, at Emmanuel Episcopal, at 2pm.

 In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Jubilee Partners, 210 Main St, Comer, GA 30629 or to the Open Door Community, 910 Ponce de Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30306.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Melissa Fox and Compassionate Care Hospice  for their care of Ms. Reinke.
